While Cape Wind's proposal could provide tremendous benefits to the local Cape Cod environment and economy, supplying 75% of the area with clean/renewable power, the main obstacle remains the visual impact and the notion of a pristine landscape becoming industrialized. Can we, as designers, propose an alternative vision to this project, one in which the Cape Cod community would welcome in its backyard? A design competition to explore ideas in wind farm design and, in particular, the aesthetics of the Cape Wind project as proposed in Nantucket Sound, could be the forum to present fresh perspectives on this issue. Although the turbines themselves are engineered for efficiency, components such as a visitors' interpretation and education center, viewing platforms, power transfer stations, lighting, and the overall layout could be designed to bring additional meaning to the site and community. Could there be a wind park solution for this wind farm debate? Kathy Wislocky of Wilson Architects, and others, will be leading this discussion. |
