Temporary Hoffman Lab - Harvard University, Cambridge, MA
The temporary Hoffman Laboratory is a 1,200 SF renovation in Pierce Hall; the lab is formed around an isolated experiment chamber placed on a 20 ton concrete pad. A probe pit is located in the center of the inertia pad and houses the cryostat dewar and experiment ‘head’. Included in the lab are a control room, prep area, office and conference space. The group’s research revolves around scanning probe microscopies of novel materials, with a focus on scanning tunneling microscopy of unconventional superconductors. The design goals are to isolate the experiment from vibration, noise, and magnetic fields, while being connected to instruments and pumps that serve the experiment.
