21st Avenue Pedestrian Bridge - Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN
In 1979 Vanderbilt acquired the historic Peabody College. The busy 21st Avenue divided the two campuses and caused safety concerns due to the heightened foot traffic across the corridor. WA was hired to connect the two campuses with a pedestrian bridge. A modified bow truss design was chosen as the main span to act as a signature landmark that identifies the heart of the institutions, and now defines a campus gateway. The use of brick and cut stone masonry compliment the steel bridge, forming a harmony among the varying campus architectural styles. The design team incorporated traffic signals, sight lighting, and pedestrian illumination into the actual bridge design.
